Richard: Naval Basic Training

My dad, Richard Byron Lohman, entered World War II, joining the U.S. Navy on November 20, 1942 at the age of 18.

He did his basic training at the U.S. Naval Training Station in Great Lakes, Illinois. When he arrived, that station was training approximately 100,000 recruits at any given time. Dad ended up serving his entire time on a troop transport ship - the USS General A.E. Anderson. He would be honorably discharged exactly three years later on November 20th, 1945.

These are two sets of postcards that my dad kept all these years. They provide a good glimpse into that era.
